Our Programs

Each December, BETTER WITH BOOKS joins with local nonprofit, One Voice, for their Holiday Food Program. One Voice provides 2500 Head Start families with food baskets brimming with all the trimmings for a holiday meal, as well as a visit with Santa. Better With Books is there to give more than 5000 children a brand new book. For most, this is the first book they have ever owned.

We give only brand new books because we want to instill a sense of pride and help these kids feel special. Our volunteers hand-select a book for each child, striving to match their age, reading level and interests. We help older children choose a book that excites them. Our core program, the Holiday Book Giveaway has reached over 157,000 children. Check our Events Page for opportunities to lend a hand.

We utilize our literacy resources to create libraries where none exist. Our Head Start Holiday visits inspired this program as they most often they have few books for the many children they serve. We build libraries to meet the needs of nonprofit organizations that reach underserved children, but whose primary focus is not literacy. Launched in 1998 with a fundraiser to honor actress and best-selling children’s book author Jamie Lee Curtis, we have built 300 Little Libraries.

Each Little Library is filled with wonderful books about A-B-C's and Once Upon A Time – books that spark imagination, inspire dreams, and transport kids to magical places. Little Libraries bring the gift of reading to thousands of underprivileged children a year. Over time, these books will touch the lives of countless children, making it possible for them to have dreams for their future that really can come true.

Each year we reach new organizations and replenish books in the Head Start Centers we visit. Recipients include food banks, shelters, inner-city health clinics, and many innovative and grassroots organizations reaching children in need. Support our efforts on our Donate Page.

Thanks to a donation from the Friars Charitable Foundation and in collaboration with Better With Books, every parent or guardian of a child from infants through six-years-old who received a new book was also given a durable bookmark designed to provide guidance on how to read with their child to build essential pre-literacy skills, paving the way for these children to become successful, lifelong readers. To reach our diverse community, “Reading Aloud Reminders” are printed in Spanish, Vietnamese, and Thai, with English on the reverse. Support our efforts on our Donate Page.

One of the most powerful influences on children’s behavior is parental role modeling. Seeing their parents read encourages kids to do the same. Our “See Mom and Dad Read” initiative uses no organizational funds, seeking donations of gently used adult books for the parents of our Head Start kids. We are expanding this program with specially directed donations to provide Spanish Language Books for Adults. Support our efforts at Give Books.
